Nothing new here. He's been doing this ona regular basis for more then a decade, only since Trump and Lepin he's getting a lot more traction in foreign media.

Something the Muricans don't seem to understand, we have a history of more then two decades with populist movements. With the murder of Pim Fortuyn as an absolute lowpoint in our democratic history.

Was just reading about his assassination. Apparently there was a film made about it, the creator of which was also assassinated:

On 2 November 2004, Van Gogh was murdered by Mohammed Bouyeri, a Dutch-Moroccan Muslim due to his controversial film. The last film Van Gogh had completed before his death, 06/05, was a fictional exploration of the assassination of Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn which was released in December 2004, a month following van Gogh's assassination.

The assasination of Theo van Gogh was a horrid thing. He was more then a director. He was family of Vincent van Gogh, an artist, columnist, theater writer, tv personality etc etc. He had wide exposure in papers and TV on a near daily basis. He also openly critizised the Islam on a daily basis on paper, word and film. You should check Hirshi Aly as well to complete the start 2000 sentiment change in the NL. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayaan_Hirsi_Ali

The Dutch where spared big terror attacks recently but those two murders shook our little nation and our cultural renouned tolerance to the core.

Fortuyn's party won rather large in the election a few weeks later and got asked to join the coalition with the Christians and liberals. That ended very badly, a lot of new captains on a steerless ship. It has a lot of comparrisons to the current Trump disaster going on. The coalition was riddled with bullshit, restlesness, ministers resigning etc etc.... Only lasted about 7 months then we had new elections and his party vanished. Wilders became the new right wing after.

As a prime example: a state secretary was in function for only a few hours. She had lied about her past and told the press "there where no photo's of her in uniform" . The same night she got sworn in articles and photo's of her in Surinamese military uniform got published and it became clear she served in the Suriname Army under the Desi Bouterse Era.....

It was a complete mess all in all and we where lucky the cabinet imploded and we could have new elections.

Seems like something stupid to lie about...many people were bound to have some sort of proof of that.
