Prime Minister Rutte was received at the White House by President Trump. Before the start of their conversation in the Oval Office behind closed doors, the two leaders exchanged kindnesses.

President Trump said that the relationship with the Netherlands has never been as good as at the moment.

In his answer Rutte pointed to the strong ties that always existed between the Netherlands and the United States. Jobs and safety are, according to Rutte, the most important themes. He emphasized that the countries create jobs and that they benefit from the intensification of the relationship.

Rutte talks about what he wants to talk about with Trump (English, not subtitled):

Trump did not answer that in his answer. He did say to the press that he had a good talk with the newly elected president of Mexico, Lopez Obrador.

After the interview, which will take about an hour, Rutte will give a press conference. Trade conflict

The meeting between the American president and the prime minister comes at a politically sensitive time. Rutte is the first European head of government to visit Trump since the beginning of the trade dispute between the US and the European Union.

Just today, the EU announced that the impending US tax on the import of European cars will be answered with a package of counter-measures worth 300 billion dollars.

Below is a video of the arrival of Rutte at the White House:

Rutte entered the White House first as the Dutch prime minister. In the NOS Journaal he said that he wants to talk to Trump about the economic ties and cooperation in the field of security, "to show that we want to maintain Atlantic cooperation on those points".

According to NOS correspondent Wouter Zwart, this interview will take Rutte to get through the conversation, without any crazy things happening.

I watched the event live. It all seemed friendly. Both seemed optimistic.

Rutte is pretty good at doing the "buddy-buddy thing". In Dutch media he has been critical towards Trump, but mostly in short soundbites and not really as an agenda. (we got plenty of shit going on back home then to worry to much about orange-man)

Trump did say he's on Dutch side in the MH-17 disaster this meeting, which is a good thing.
