[Quick set up: The French pirate, François l'Olonnais, and his crew had set off for Nicaragua, but ran into a becalmed sea. As they were unable to go much further, they decided to put into the first port they found and began terrorizing the locals. The following takes place after the crew made landfall at the port of Puerto Cavallo.]
The pirates found themselves on the road to a prosperous town; from their torture of locals, they knew that soldiers were waiting ahead of them in an ambush. What they needed was an alternative route, but one after the other the Spanish told them there was no other way forward. L’Ollonais finally snapped. “[He] grew outrageously passionate; insomuch that he drew his cutlass, and with it cut open the breast of one of those poor Spaniards, and pulling out his heart with his sacrilegious hands, began to bite and gnaw it with his teeth, like a ravenous wolf, saying to the rest: I will serve you all like, if you show me not another way.”
