[The following is in regards to the disastrous social and economic policies of Nicolae Ceaușescu, President of Romania, and Elena Ceaușescu, his wife.]

In 1966 Nicolae Ceausescu, with the full backing of his domineering wife, began to pass a series of laws making abortion illegal. Further, he prohibited the use of contraception and decreed that each married woman under the age of forty have a minimum of four children (a number that was later increased to five). Ceausescu also made divorce almost impossible to obtain and increased taxes not only on childless couples but also on those who had three children or less. From beginning to end it was a disastrous policy. Families who could barely support one or two-children suddenly had to fill even more mouths. And women in particular suffered hardships. Unable to escape unhappy marriages and forced into one pregnancy after another (or into backstreet abortions) they soon became no more than glorified birth machines.
