[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]

Friday, April 7th

The Rebels retreated on the Rail Road and we followed them closely for about four miles. There they about faced and gave us some shells and other small compliments which was returned with interest.

While our artillery was playing on them we was busy piling up rails and old logs to stop some of their missiles. Our brigade commander and staff came up and a shell took the head off of the bugler and he stiffened and set in the saddle for a few seconds, but his bugle was taken off. Another soldier got in the saddle and rode off with the dead mans brains smeared over the horse and saddle.
