Members of the Waffen-SS in particular were targets for revenge, in large measure because of the Malmedy massacre:
As it was, the only men that we [Allied troops] shot on sight were the SS. The young men educated entirely under Hitler’s regime, who were responsible for the most atrocious crimes required by the Nazi Party. Although it can never be officially admitted, since it is a direct violation of the Geneva Convention, we killed these men, whether they had surrendered to us or not. Incidentally, American troops violated this convention in many other ways besides shooting SS men under white flags.
