[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]

Saturday, Sept 3rd

The Regiment all went out on Fatigue duty, I sent over to the 85th. Bro Ed had peas for dinner, we got to talking about old times, I eat all the peas and when I started home I could hardly get there, while we was eating a shell came over (a very common thing) and took a mans arm off. I got back to quarters safely.
