Some scholars note that bombing [of Auschwitz] might have only briefly stopped the slaughter, before the Nazis rebuilt the death chambers, crematoria and rail lines or used other swift and brutal means of killing Jews – and that bombing might have merely provoked the Nazis into speeding up the killing, perhaps by other means.

In contrast, Elie Wiesel, the most eloquent survivor of the death camp known as Auschwitz III, wishes that the Americans had bombed. Wiesel has written that even had the bombing killed Jewish inmates, “we were no longer afraid of death – at any rate, not that death.”
