[The following is taken from a memoir of Irmgard A. Hunt, who grew up in the mountains under Hitler’s Eagles Nest during the Second World War.]

Young women in Berchtesgaden planned to hide in the mountains in case of Soviet occupation. Mutti [German: Mom] gave me – but not Ingrid, who surely was too small – a tiny, light-yellow paper envelope that contained a teaspoon of ground pepper and told me to carry it in my apron pocket at all times. If any enemy soldier threatened to harm me, I should throw the pepper into his eyes. I said I would try but that I would surely escape anyway because I was a fast runner. Pepper, by the way, was not easy to come by. Tante [German: Aunt] had an illicit source, but even though my mother disapproved of the black market, she accepted enough of the precious spice for protection.
