Simeon of Durham, who witnessed the Viking raid on Lindisfarne in A.D. 793, said, “The pagans arrived like stinging hornets and spreading on all sides like fearful wolves, robbed, tore, and slaughtered not only beasts of burden, but even priests and monks and nuns. They came to the church at Lindisfarne and destroyed everything. Some of them polluted the holy places. Their mouths frothed, their eyes stared, they howled like wild beasts.”

One Viking had the nickname “The Children’s Man” because he took great pleasure in tossing the babies of his victims in the air, catching them with the point of his spear.
