Copyright is a huge scam at this point that has been abused beyond any rational point of benefit. You're exactly right that it is insane rent seeking, and it needs to be heavily reformed and abolished. No more than 25-years for sure. It's such a crime to have our cultural heritage locked away by these companies when most of the old works like this aren't even of any commercial value to them.
