So I basically bought this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SADES-SNUK-USB-PC-Gaming-Headset-Microphone-Chat-BRAND-NEW-Genuine-SA-902/271858273413?epid=2255647736&hash=item3f4c040c85:g:0-EAAOSwrklVRbyX
because my old headphones are losing the plastic coating from around the muffs and they hurt my ears. These new ones I bought are a superseded model which is why they are so much cheaper than the 903 model. All I really wanted was something that would cover my whole ear and that had a microphone as well.
It worked out of the box with Windows 10and I tested it out in Far Cry 5 but I installed the driver anyway and set about looking through the options. One of them was 7.1 surround sound so I ticked the box and went back into Far Cry 5. The difference was night and day. Suddenly when a car drove past me on the road I could hear it driving up to me and past me. I could tell how close it was by just the sound. Gunshots in the distance I no longer had to run around and hope the on screen "danger indicator" popped up to show me where it was coming from, I could hear where it was coming from. I only tested one game also so I'm not sure if it will work as well with anything else.
Also works well with alsa/pulseaudio in Linux but for some reason Linux doesn't seem to be able to mute USB audio, at least not easily, and the volume controls are only per application.
Also it's made out of cheapish looking plastic if that bothers anyone.
