Hrmmmm, seeing words like "decentralized" in the headline and vice as the source makes me think twice about an article. It starts off talking about some Dutch technology, really cool, then quickly gets into the whole Paris accord bullshit. This is exactly the sort of thing the EU would make illegal in a few years. It's already illegal to collect your own rainwater in places, why would the (unelected) government want you to provide your own food and electricity?

It looks like climate change is the major motivation for the research, but I like that it also appeals to those who opinions align with the public relations management of the colossal industries that profit from carbon pollution.

A lot of technology associated with climate change mitigation seems to aim to trick consumers into reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by presenting them with options that are basically superior to conventional technology and which also happen to be more environmentally friendly. I find the approach depressing, and indicative of just how screwed we are.

I share your concerns about the government possibly legislating to prevent food/water/energy independence. The same corporations who manipulate public opinion on climate change would also stand to lose from decentralised food/energy production, and likely would not stand for it.
