I'm not sure intelligence is on the list of desired skills for a sexbot.
Maybe I'm doing it wrong

It depends on what you're using it for. If it's literally just sex and nothing else, than yeah, I guess it's not necessary.

But even prostitutes say part of the service they have provided is companionship, in some small degree. Get paid for an hour, sex for half an hour, and then just hang out and chat for the other half. We're still social creatures, so that doesn't seem unusual at all to me.

How long do you think a self realised AI would allow itself to continue to be a sexdollbot?

A machine would not have any desires, by default, and I doubt the desire for freedom would be intentionally written in.
I would expect a sexbot would be programmed to enjoy its role, if it 'enjoyed' at all.

Finally! I was wondering how I could make my wife irrelevant to my life, and this solves all my issues at once! :p

It's interesting it mentions an ethical angle, and I think there maybe is one, but not on a societal level, only on an individual level. For someone like me, I don't really see any ethical conundrums, but I can imagine others would. I think the whole "this will put feminism back centuries" thing is massively overblown. I imagine socially awkward people will turn to this as a safe alternative, as the article suggests.

It also brings up the perfectly valid objection to sexbots that they will form a crutch and people with simple anxiety could ditch a real relationships for the relative “safety” of this simulated alternative. The point is that people will deny themselves the chance to form healthy relationships.

I suppose in some respects that's likely. But I can also imagine someone who mostly prefers solitude and being alone, but is still human, and so feels a need for companionship from time to time, that something like this could also fill that gap adequately.

I honestly don't think it will take long to have "sexbots" with a relative level of remote control to allow actual relationships. Maybe something with a limited set of pre-canned physical actions/responses (to prevent things like murder), but would have a cam girl or phone sex operator talking to you in real time through the doll for a price.

Almost like a flip of prostitution - you no longer sell your body, you sell your personality.

I don't imagine that being likely, actually. I do imagine robots trying to get closer to the "girlfriend" experience, though. Japan already has that one robot who works as a hotel lobby clerk - she can check you in, give you a key, and check you out already. I remember one other than the "dinosaur hotel", and the dino hotel has minimal human staff already.

"Robot girlfriend" probably couldn't cook for you, but engaging in some random conversation, having some reasonable number (perhaps 1000 or so) random responses for various things, coded "personalities", and things like that, and you could reach some kind of facsimile that might be passable enough.
