Pretty much just a religious evolution. Polytheism was/is great for explaining natural occurrences to the masses so why not just attribute all of it to one supernatural being instead?

Monotheism is also intolerant. Multiple polytheistic gods can coexist, but montheism demands complete obedience to one god. From an evolutionary perspective, it makes sense why this belief would crowd out others.
