There was a desalination plant in Tijuana, IIRC. It worked fine, but the cost of taking a shower amounted to $150 old pesos, which was more than a journeyman earned in a week.

There's got to be some simple innovation that will get discovered, similar to the process behind modern nitrogen fertilizers, that would revolutionize desalination and solve a big chunk of the world's water limitations.
