I wish I could go into the head of a religious person who actually believes there is risk to their eternal soul because the wrong word was used despite the sincere intent.

It appears that it was the intention of the priest that was deemed invalid, not necessarily that of the one being baptized.

Well, sincere intent has little to do with Christianity. I think you pledge allegiance or go to hell, no matter how good a person you are. Seemingly unimportant rules are pretty central to the whole thing.
