Overproduction is killing bands. Every album the Flatliners have released has been more tame/bland than the previous one, and it is because they're going way over the top with production and removing the punchiness and excitement from their sound. I saw them just after they released their last album, which was already straying from their original sound quite a bit. Live, they still sound great and their sound has not changed one bit in that respect, so why are they fucking up all their albums?
This is a problem that isn't even just plaguing newer bands too. The last Descendents album wasn't that great for the same reason, and I only listened to the new NOFX one once. Again, both bands are still really good live bands, so why are they fucking up all their albums?
It doesn't need to sound like it has been recorded with a potato in a basement, but it doesn't need to have a production quality on par with an ISIS execution video either.
Fuck.
