First thing many people do is horse alternative sources of currency. Got to say that if shit hit the fan and someone offered me gold or silver for food I would turn them away. I have no use for it and it will be quickly apparent to others of the same reality.
Cigarettes, food, water, creature comforts as well will be the most valuable as will fuel. Electric generation as well.
I can tell you now that at first bullets or guns will be scarce, but not after so long because people will start dyyng and leaving shit behind.
Bullets go fast though. I agree that they would probably grow in accessibility at first.
But after a coupe years they might become very valuable.
That would partly depend on what triggered the Apocalypse.
Solar flare/EMP. No power (internet) or running water.
Grow food onsite, 1/4 acre garden, and access to ponds for fish and birds, plus pressure cookers, mason jars, and lots of salt for long term storage. deer and pigs withing a few miles in a couple directions. Installing gutters all the way around to collect water into a 250 gallon basin soon. A dozen small rollup solar panels, crank radios, batteries, CB radios, handheld hams, uhf/vhfs, all wrapped in a tall emp sealed ammo cans. Iodine tablets, med supplies, antibiotics, hand water pumps, and multiple water filters..

I'm prepped and ready for about 3 or 4 days of heavy drinking.
We're pretty nomadic at the moment, but I'm looking forward to setting somewhere in the medium term so I can explore my prepper side. Not that I have a particular disaster in mind, but relying so heavily on the largest societal structures isn't a great feeling.
I'm prepped for Zombies.
I don't expect Zombies, but I figure if I am ready for them, I'm as ready as I can be for the unknown.
