This song was written during the Cuban Missile Crisis, at night, during a blackout, while everyone assumed that nuclear war was coming.

Hence, "Where are all the people, my honey?"

The first voice is the person missing all the others and is pining for human contact. The second voice is the reality that their is no more human contact, or at least that's how I interpret it.

I also feel that the 2 voices are the same survivor - one hopeful, one realist.

I just like this song because Jerry takes this funeral dirge for humanity and plays this spirit lifting solo that gives you hope at humankind's lowest point. Always amazes me.

I remember that 15 minutes when we were told an attack was imminent. It definitely affected me as a child.
