I misunderstood the title. I thought "55 miles? Big deal, I hitched more than 4,000 km when I was younger than him".
But then I read the article and found out he rode on the outside of the vehicle. That's a bit extreme.
Where I'm from 'hitching a ride' means on the inside, riding on the outside is called 'suicide'.
