Catalan police announce opposition to Spanish acquisition
The Spanish police have temporarily taken over the authority of the Catalan police force. All agents, Spanish and Catalan, fall under one central command immediately. "This has never happened," says correspondent Rop Zoutberg from Barcelona. He says the situation is explosive and that he holds his heart.
Catalonia has 17,000 police officers, who now have to listen to commands from Madrid, at least until October 1.
The head of security services in Catalonia has said he does not accept the Madrid measure. Joaquim Forn says that the chief of police service Mossos d'Esquadra has announced in urgent consultation with other security services.
So far, there are no public protests.
Yesterday it was known that Spain sends a few thousand agents to Catalonia to prevent the Catalans from holding a referendum on independence on October 1. Initially, the Spanish police officers only "assisted" the autonomous Catalan police, but now it appears that they take control completely.
The tension between the Spanish government in Madrid and the Catalan regional government has lately been cut. The Catalan government wants to hold a referendum on independence on October 1, but the Spanish government does everything to break that mood.
Both parties are on a ramp, says Zoutberg. "Madrid is going through, but Catalonia too. Nobody wants to do water at the wine."
Tailwind
According to Zoutberg, today's police measure will positively unpack the Catalan separatists. "The county government is getting the wind in the back. I hear people say," I was not going to vote at all, but now I want to make a fist against Spain. "
In the past few days, tens of thousands of Catalans have gone up to protest against attacks in the regional government offices and the arrest of regional directors. In addition, the police performed multiple arrests.
Zoutberg expects a new mass protest event because of the 'incarnation' of the Catalan police.
Dutch media already posted that Catalunyan police will have none of it:
