In the event of Comey making misleading statements to the press and the tapes being released to contradict Comey, the media will ignore the tapes in favor of whatever narrative he spawned.
Doing this lets gives actual journalists a heads-up to start looking for recordings, and/or encourages Comey to be very honest about what he leaks.
