From what I remember, isn't it a hoax? I thought it was a fantasy of Lovecraft that he perpetuated as the truth? Either way it has a really interesting history.

If you study and know more ancient mystical practices, he draws heavily from those systems to create his mythology. Of course it also preys on archetypal fears so it seems more reasonable than you might think if you just happen across it without background knowledge.
