This is from 2013 but it still works on my machine.
Couple of things to note since the article is so old: Most distros should have compton in the official packages by now. No need to add a repository. They should also have compton-conf which is a Gui that will write a few changes to compton.conf in your home folder as described in the link above. A few distros/desktop environments will even have settings in the settings manager that will let you switch between different compositors.
Once it’s installed, create a text file in ~/.config/
" ~/ " just means your home folder. If you can't see the folder .config in there, look for a file manager menu option to show hidden files.
