When I tried out Xubuntu 17.10 on my old laptop I had issues with internet not connecting. I had the same issue with hwe kernels on 16.04 as well. Apparently newer kernels use systemd to manage parts of the network involving DNS resolution now and that was causing issues. I wonder if the problems persist on 18.04.
