many memes originally circulate in small Discord channels or on group chats

memes are first shared on two places, the subreddit r/the_donald and 4chan’s “politically incorrect”

Somewhere out there, an advertizing firm is getting very nervous.

Implying that all of this stuff comes from legitimate users. I don't think that's the case with TD and /pol/, I get the same vibe from those places as I do on Voat. There is an organised entity that pushes this stuff, it isn't completely organic.

Exactly. 2015 was in interesting year for both voat and 4chan. Voat got venture capital support, incorporated in the US, and had both bitcoin dust attacks, and sustained DDoS. 4chan was sold, and moot stepped down. Both sites had "major" controversies involving the word "gate" (speaking of inorganic memes). Neither site disclosed the terms of their acquisition.

Its been clear for a long time that the internet is now a propaganda machine for fat-cat political figures, but most people seem to miss the fact that the machine isn't just owned by one side. Its a battlefield now.
