Some people like to misinterpret Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' as a dystopian novel about a world where people are controlled by the state by indulging their desires and making them too happy to even consider unorthodoxy. People are basically genetically engineered to do specific jobs their entire lives, and they are brainwashed into liking it. If they ever do feel unhappy, they can take a drug called 'Soma' to make all those bad feelings go away.

Well? What's so bad about any of that? That all sounds literally perfect compared to the nightmare world we live in today. People today are unhappy, and BNW knows that the reason people today are unhappy is because they have to make choices, and sometimes those choices are bad and have bad consequences. But if they didn't get to make choices, and they were conditioned to love the consequences, then they would always be happy. BNW is actually a utopian society that has managed to make all sadness go away! Why wouldn't you want that?!

We have freedom now and I hate it. I don't want freedom, because I keep making bad choices and those choices hurt and make me sad. I don't like my freedom, take it away, please! Please!

Sadly, Soma doesn't exist yet, but I've been experimenting with similar drugs, hoping that I can figure out a cocktail of drugs that would add up to Soma. It's gotta be some kind of combination of cannabis, and ecstasy, and anti-depressants, and maybe a dash of some kind of animal tranquilizer. That last one is the tough part, but I know that eventually, I'll crack it!

The best part is that nowadays we wouldn't even need the genetic engineering. We could just make robots do all the work for us, and all we'd have to do is sit around and fuck and watch tv and play video games and eat and take soma and then die. Isn't that all any of us have ever wanted?! Then why aren't we chasing that goal right now!?

I know that one day, we'll get there. But it's up to us to make it happen. I can focus some of my efforts on inventing soma, but we still need so many other breakthroughs in order to make it happen. So, let's go out there and do it! Long live the World State! All hail Ford/Freud!

I think your post actually illustrates perfectly the most valuable point of that book: Some people are horrified by that world, and others are attracted to it.

That's not to say that either side is really "wrong" for feeling that way, but there's some vague character trait in each of us that makes us feel strongly one way or the other. Have you ever met someone that was neutral on that book? People either love it or hate it.

I'm really not sure if you're trolling or not. If not, you're surely entitled to your opinion. Personally I'd rather have a world where you could opt-in to the BNW system.

And it never will, unfortunately. The most basic principle of drugs is that they get less fun the longer you do them. Our bodies adapt to changing levels of neurotransmitters in an attempt to keep our functional brain chemistry consistent. You might be able to find a combo of drugs that approximates soma, but you'll need more and more each time, with greater and greater side effects. And there are always side effects. For every up, there must be a down.

Everything on /s/HorribleOpinions is completely serious

But that would be a choice! I thought I told you that I can't make those!

Oh God, you're right! EVERYTHING I BELIEVE IN IS A LIE!!!

I wrote this down and taped it next to the touchpad on my laptop.
