*To dollar bills and future coinage.
Starting with the Morgan dollar in the late 1800's (1880's?) the phrase began to appear on American currency.
But yeah, got to scare off those dirty commies by adding "In god we trust" to our currency. Because as we all know, people with evil intentions can't stand to handle US bills containing that phrase.

I can't help but wish we had a version that said "In Odin We Trust"
