If people were reluctant to tangle with Bowie, they were downright terrified of Alexander Keith McClung of Kentucky, the Black Knight of the South [A famous and prodigious duelist]. He offended a man – he was always offending someone – who handed him his card by way of a challenge. McClung gave him his own. The man read it, turned white, and stammered out, “Just let me have my card back, that’s all I ask.” McClung gave it back.
