During the Cleveland presidency, a young second secretary from the Swedish embassy at a White House dinner cut into a wedge of lettuce and found a live worm. He was about to push the plate away when he noticed Mrs. Cleveland watching him intently. He stiffened in his chair and then ate the lettuce, worm and all.
”That wasn’t necessary,” said Mrs. Cleveland, “but it showed fantastic poise in time of emergency – you will go far, young man.”
Fifteen years later, he was back as his country’s ambassador in Washington.
