Captain Blaze recorded Napoleon’s conversation with a colonel who had clearly mastered his regimental rolls:
’How many men present under arms?’
’Sire, eighty-four.’
’How many conscripts of this year?’
’Twenty-two.’
’How many soldiers who have served four years?’
’Sixty-five.’
’How many wounded yesterday?’
’Eighteen.’
’And killed?’
’Ten.’
’With the bayonet?’
’Yes.’
’Good.’
