[The following takes place in Southeast Asia following the surrender of Japanese forces at the end of World War II.]

Suddenly the streets were jammed with cars again, cars that had been scarce for so many years. Friedemann told me about how clever the Chinese had been: They took their vehicles apart when the Japanese conquered Singapore and distributed the parts among their kinfolks, waiting for this very moment to resurrect them.
