Speer later reported that before World War II, Hitler felt “deeply irked” and “cheated” when he heard that Stalin was building the world’s tallest monumental edifice in Moscow. When Germany went to war against the Soviets, the Führer was delighted that Stalin’s project had to stop. He told Speer, “Now this will be the end of their building for good and all.”
