[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]

Sunday, Octr 30th

This is another fine morning. Middle of the day very warm. Evening Cool. Last night the rebels came over and relieved about three hundred of our pickets and took them over prisoners. It was very dark, they captured two posts first without making any alarm, and then a large party came over and moved to the rear of our Pickets. Our Pickets thought it was their relief coming. So they got in back of them and drove them in to the rebel camp as prisoners. They belonged to the 6th Corps and joined us on the left. The Johnnies are a sneaking lot of devils.
