[The following is from the Civil War diary of Samuel Clear, a Union soldier.]

Monday, June 20

We are still on Picket. Alexander Chisholm and I were in one hole, he was asleep or at least his eyes were shut, a Reb minie ball struck him in the head and it waked him in short order. It was a spent ball having come through the clay flanks of our pit. He d-----------m’d [said ‘damn’] a little and then got his gun and popped away all day at the reb who was behind sand bags up the railroad track. Alex was determined to kill the Son of a B--------.
