Coughlin had a special hatred for Morgenthau [US Secretary of Treasury]. In 1934, after Coughlin had shrieked to his large radio audience against Jewish traffickers in silver, the Treasury Secretary humiliated him by issuing a list of the largest silver owners in the United States.

To Coughlin’s horror, it included the name of his personal secretary, who, by investing the ample cash that Coughlin took in from his listeners, had become the largest silver investor in Michigan.

Coughlin publicly declared that Morgenthau’s “investigation smells to high heaven.”
