After leaving the White House, the Trumans acquired two cars. Since Mrs. Truman wouldn’t let her husband drive her new Chrysler, Truman bought himself a Dodge coupe. He hadn’t had it long, however, before he scraped all the chrome off one side when he hit a very narrow gate in the back of the house in Independence.
His wife was triumphant; it proved she was right in keeping him away from her car. But about two weeks later she called his office sounding crestfallen.
”Anything the matter?” he asked.
”Well,” she said sheepishly, “I hate to tell you this, but the truth is I was coming through the gate this morning and scraped the chromium off the side of my car.”
