During the filming of Bringing Up Baby (1938), director Howard Hawks was impressed by Katharine Hepburn’s gift for improvisation. “In one scene she broke the heel of a shoe,” he recalled. “She was right on camera, and without fluffing a line, she said, as she limped, ‘I was born on the side of a hill!’ “
