At best James ignored the knots of people at the roadsides and at worst he insulted them. In one infamous incident that took place later in the summer he responded to a request to acknowledge a small crowd of onlookers by crying out in Scots: “By God’s wounds! I will pull down my breeches and they shall also see my arse!”
