Something of a similar circumstance occurred to Major General Adolf (“Dolfo”) Galland, who was Germany’s General of Fighters and one of the top aces of World War II, having shot down 104 Allied aircraft. Galland was shot down by a young American pilot named Jim Finnegan.

In 1982, Galland visited Finnegan in San Francisco, where he showed his badly scarred knee to Finnegan’s four-year-old grandson, saying, “See what your grandfather did to me?”
