Man steel mills have changed a lot since the 40s. I used to work doing web development for a steel company in Ohio and every employee toured their plants at least once. In the old factories, every inch was covered in soot, but the new ones were almost fully automated and nearly pristine. I was surprised how few people there were on the floor at the new factories.

Everywhere between Youngstown and Pittsburgh and beyond was Steel. Follow the rivers and you'll find the old mills.
