he log entries are not real, these were embelishments which were added to the story later, as is the half eaten food and possibly the overturned chair.

The clock being stopped is nothing unusual as it was a clock manufactured at the turn of the century and it would have had to be wound in order to keep ticking away. With the lighthouse keepers gone it would have stopped eventually.

Finally, YES there was bad weather over the isles! This is why the relief vessel turned up on 26th December instead of just before Christmas as originally intended. The keepers were originally to be relieved on 21st December so that they could spend Christmas at home with their families.

I personally like the idea of infrasonics from the winds driving people "off"

Note that the Light house is normally visible at the next bit of land in clear weather. Doesn't rule out high winds though.
