they tried to run over the man with his own vehicle

fired shots at the suspects, who tried to get away, but couldn't exit the apartment complex's gate.

When the owner ran over and tried to get his truck back, at least two of the gunmen opened fire on him.

Not self defense once the threat of being run over had passed. This dude did so many things wrong here.

He killed a murderous thief.

This is exactly right, and we need a lot more of the same.

I don't disagree with you. But the law does. It's illegal to:

Kill to prevent theft

Run back into the situation knowing that it would lead to you attempting to kill someone.

The only time he would have been justified in killing them (legally) is when they tried to run him over.

Texas.

If I'm not mistaken, you can indeed use deadly force to protect your property, and even your neighbor's property.
