I'd recommend keeping the guns loaded while idle
I used to keep them loaded but not chambered. Took my conceal carry class and came to the realization that it was because I was afraid that the gun would go off on its own. I stopped doing that and started carrying chambered. Not long after, I ended up having to pull the gun to defend myself. I was very glad at that point.
Actually and to the point, I now have a very high capacity shotgun sitting by the front door in case these morons decide to knock on my door after going to someone else's door to spread COVID while telling me that I'm spreading COVID.
