It’s a way of trying to make sense of a complex and confusing world for an ordinary citizen.
I'm sure this is true in many cases, but it must be horrifying to unconditionally believe this statement, then realize that 60% of your democracy is part of that category. Or that the journalists you teach are mistrusted by 77% of the population.
As they say: Just think about how stupid the average person is, and then how half the people are even dumber.
