My cat was feuding with the dog next door. They always swore at and threatened each other any time they were both out. The dog would often tree my cat, or chase him inside. This went on for a long time.
We got a dog of our own. A tiny little puppy. The cat didn't have much use for the puppy, and would beat him up when the puppy tried to play.
The dog was a dog though, and continued to seek the cats approval.
The dog grew, but the cat realized that the dog still considered the cat to be the boss. The dog would even follow the cat around.
So the cat learned to use this.
He would 'position' our dog outside in a chosen ambush location, then go next door and harass the neighbor dog. That dog would chase, and my cat would run to our dog, then fake a cry of pain.
Well, my dog reacts like a good boy, and tries to protect his pack. Neighbour dog was bigger than a cat, but not as big as my dog had become.
Neighbour dog got his ass kicked. That cat repeated similar variations of that ambush many, many, times.
Fortunately my dog wasn't a killer and never did significant damage to the other.
That cat was an asshole. But, in his defense the dog did start it.
