This was kind of a test link.
Peertube is an open source YouTube alternative that anybody can run. Instances are federated, so that you can view videos hosted on other Peertube instances from one's they're not hosted on. Videos are also shared via P2P, so if a video gets particularly popular then viewers are actually sharing it with other viewers rather than choking the host, so that's the up and down arrows you see on the video interface.
The speed of the video, when it's not popular (spoiler: none of them really are) is going to be dependent on the host. Some are better than others. I think peertube.nsa.ovh appears to be about the fastest I've seen. Replace the "peertube.pl" part of this video's link with "peertube.nsa.ovh" and the video should still work: link. You'll notice the user changes to showing a <[email protected]> format now because you're off the host site.
I poked around the site a bit after making that comment.
It is hit and miss on the speeds. Mostly miss, but some decent.
There could be potential here, time will tell.
With no associated revenue stream, I don't see it being adopted by most creators. So that may affect its growth, and might limit it.
It faces a chicken/egg problem first. They need more content to attract viewers, and more viewers to attract content.
This site seems to be like early youtube. You load the page, pause the video, and switch to another tab while you wait for it to buffer.
Then come back sometime later to watch it. It took far too long to load a 17 second video.
I think the concept behind the site seems like a good one, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Hopefully it gets better with more users or future improvements.
