I heard this weird tapping sound around the outside of the house. This woodpecker is chipping away at mortar between my bricks. I don't want to shoot him (I'd use a bb gun it's a residential area) but how do I get rid of him? He's legit making some progress chipping away mortar in spots. I've never seen anything like this shit before. He's not even that high up. I chased him off yesterday but heard him again today watering the grass in my back yard.

He is there for a reason. He must hear something worth investigating in there. Woodpeckers peck to search for food in the form of ants or larva of several insects.

I might remove a small section of drywall in the house around that area if this keeps up and take a peak but we don't have any kind of a bug problem. It's just really bizarre.

You might not know that you do have a bug problem. Maybe Woody is just off his rocker and likes pecking mortar, now.

I'd be more concerned about why he was:

but heard him again today watering the grass in my back yard.

I thought that too but there's nothing special about it. It's just clean hard mortar. There's no moss between bricks or anything even like that.

No ... why is he watering your lawn?

Anyway ... Link

Lol, that should read

while water the grass in my backyard

Too funny to edit so I'm going to leave it.

It's likely one of two things - there's bugs there, or it's breeding season, and he likes the sound your walls make when he pounds on them. Making noise by tapping loud things is part of their courtship behavior.

He's a good bird, just trying to get some tail or some lunch, like the rest of us.

I got up on the ladder and took a look what he was working on. It's all just clean dry mortar w/ no signs of anything. Very strange.

maybe throw a few jalapeno peppers in a blender and smear it on the spot.
