It does, doesn't it? It's so sad. But looking back through history, once a country's populace decides that it's better to surrender than fight or give in to the mob when the mob is insane, the end is close by. Roman mothers at one time bid their sons to fight with honor and return home with their shields or upon them.
Rome fell steadily into, thereafter. Sadly, I believe that the US is in the same situation.
